Highlights of Our Recent Projects

Kawaiʻula has been actively involved in several efforts in and around Waiakahiʻula Beach Park. Our recent efforts include the removal of several invasive plant species and the replacing of those with native ones.

In collaboration with local cultural organizations and government preservation offices, we have advocated for increased legal protections for endangered sites. These efforts will not only preserve the physical integrity of these locations but will also enhance public awareness and appreciation of their historical importance.

Through kīpaepae and other community engagement, we strive to empower individuals to participate in our preservation activities, ensuring that the cultural heritage of Waiakahiʻula is respected and maintained for future generations.

Protecting Iwi Kūpuna

Kawaiʻula has recently applied to the Public Access, Open Spaces, and Natural Resource Preservation Commission Program (PONC), in hopes to acquire two properties that contain iwi kūpuna (Hawaiian ancestral remains) of a high ranking individual of Waiakahiʻula. Once acquired, Kawaiʻula will help to mālama the cultural sites on the two properties.
Kawaiʻula is also seeking to protect & preserve 8 lots on Pāpaʻi Street here in Waiakahiʻula. These 8 lots contain various cultural sites from the old Waiakahiʻula village, including burial platforms.
